The left is up in arms about unions being classed as a lobby for vested interests who will have to be registered under newly proposed legislation. Clearly the unions are lobbyists, that is not in doubt, the left thinks because they have large memberships they are somehow different, more legitimate than say the National Trust. When most of the membership don’t vote in internal elections that legitimacy is questionable.
If the government is going to start registering lobbyists then paid union lobbyists should be included. The old trick of lobbying operations describing themselves as research organisations or think-tanks has been rolled out by none other than everyone’s favourite new media, left-wing voice-of-a-generation union puppet; Owen Jones. How can he afford to travel the country from TV studio to TV studio up and down the land? Simple: he is a paid lobbyist for UNITE the union and as such he should be registered.
